Test Drive A New Car

Taking a car for a test drive

When you decide it's time to buy a new or used car, it's important you take the time to make sure the car is right for you.

A test drive is really important when buying a new car, and even more important when buying a used or second hand car. It could be the only opportunity you get to make sure everything works as it should.

Ask yourself 'What type of car do I need?' A family car, where the focus should be on space, practicality and safety. Are you looking for something sportier? That's when fun factor, handling and performance are more important. Another choice is an executive car, when your focus will be on equipment, comfort and style.

You'll also need to consider fuel - Petrol vs Diesel is an ongoing debate with lots of pros and cons for each. In general, short urban trips are better suited for Petrol vehicles, Diesel enginges tend to be better for longer trips.

First of all, make sure you have car insurance then take a look at our checklist for some things you should look out for:

  • Can you get in and out of the car easily?
  • Do you find it comfortable?
  • Is the visibility good?
  • Can you see all the instruments clearly?
  • Is boot space and storage adequate for your needs?
  • Would passengers and children be able to get in and out easily enough?
  • Do you like how the car drives? Does it fit in with your driving style and needs?
  • Try to take it on a few different types of road, including the motorway.
  • Does the car suit the journeys you are likely to make? Try to take into account your most frequent trips.
  • If you have a drive or garage, will it fit in?
  • Check tax and insurance costs and ensure you can afford them.
  • What's fuel economy like? Make sure it isn't going to cost too much to run.
  • Check servicing costs and make sure these are affordable.
