The Group Rating Panel look at a number of factors, including statistics provided by Thatcham, who research the efficiency, safety, and repair costs of vehicles.
The rating a car is given are based on the 'risk' of the car, and that directly impacts the cost of insuring the vehicle. Ratings are from one to 50, with 50 being the highest group. Thatcham look at:
How much damage will the car sustain in an accident? The less damage it might suffer, the cheaper it will be to repair.
In general, the longer a car takes to repair the more it will cost to repair.
If a vehicle is expensive to purchase from new, its parts costs are also likely to be equally as expensive, compared to cheaper models.
Higher performance cars are more likely to be involved in an insurance claim, which could push them up toward the higher end of the insurance group classification
Does it come with ABS or maybe side airbags as standard? If so it may be less likely to be involved in an accident, or if it is in an accident its occupants are better protected which may reduce the cost of an insurance claim to the insurance company.
If it's more difficult to steal it will deter thieves, which may place the car in a lower insurance group.
Cars that will fall into the higher insurance group will generally be high performance or expensive models.
