When it comes to car insurance or van insurance, if you're unlucky enough to fall into one of the high risk groups, you're likely to be looking at high premiums to insure your vehicle. Telematics aims to help those in high-risk groups, such as inexperienced drivers, less frequent drivers with a low annual mileage and young drivers.
If you fall into one of these groups telematics insurance could help you pay cheaper car insurance premiums.
A telematics policy could also lead to savings for anyone else who's a good driver.
There are two ways we can track your driving habits, either by installing a 'black box' in your vehicle, or you can download an app to your smartphone that monitors your driving habits.
We track your vehicle using GPS systems, and accurately assess your driving style from the data we get, this can include location, length of trip, acceleration, braking and cornering.
Some providers may specify on your policy that you don't drive between certain hours. This is often the time when serious accidents are most likely to happen (usually late night or early morning). This doesn't mean your car is uninsured during those times, although it may affect your driving score if you do drive during these times.
Telematics cover can also come with other benefits including free anti-theft tracking and personalised online driving records.
Install the device usually takes around an hour and is usually placed beneath the dashboard or bonnet but is usually dependant on the vehicle type.
It is always placed out of sight, in the event your car is stolen your car can be tracked using the device.
What could be easier?
Download an app to your smartphone and get driving! The telematics app does all the hard work and you can log in and monitor how well you're doing.
The Telematics App is currently available for Android and Apple devices.
