Keeping Your Home Safe

Keeping Your Home Safe

Home safety is important for every homeowner

Thieves look for any opportunity to target a home, especially at times like Christmas or public holidays, when your home may be empty and with presents visible.

UK police forces have released worrying statistics of a 57% increase of burglaries in the week leading up and during Bonfire night than the rest of the year, the sound of the loud bang of a firework masking the sound of a window or door breaking.

We see a significant increase in household claims from the months of October to February.

Not only is there an increase in claims due to criminal activity but also due to weather related issues such as flooding, roof and tile damage, burst pipes due to freezing conditions to name but a few.

Install a visible burglar alarm

This will make the criminal think twice about breaking in the property, or ensure the property has an outside light that has a sensor. If the property is fitted with an alarm use it (if your property is broken in to and your alarm was not activated, it may invalidate your home insurance).

Hide keys

Car crime levels have increased with chances entering properties and taking car keys and steeling the vehicle. This is also the case with outbuilding keys too.

Lock doors and windows

As simple as this tip sounds, frequently people don’t instinctively lock their doors straight away, and on some occasions when they go to bed at night. Check that the locks are secure and ideally have the improved Mortise locks adding strength to the door. Also consider having a chain fitted for when answering the door to ensure you and your family’s safety.

Timer switches

Burglaries are an unfortunate fact of life and being broken into is a traumatic experience. Programming your main lights by simply fitting a battery operated timer over your switch on the wall will deter burglars by making them think you are home. Timer switches are like a mechanical finger, the batter operated timer physically rolls over the switch to turn it on or off. Simply fitting and using one can significantly reduce the risk of burglary in your home.

Keep valuables out of sight

Thieves and burglars may target your property or may simply look through your window and see what they could steel. By keeping mobile phones, consoles, bags, purses, cameras, laptops & tablets out of eye sight may prevent your home been the next break in statistic.
